Lighthouse – Travel Goals

Ernest Hemingway had his reasons, so does the Dalai Lama—and you can bet Oprah Winfrey has spoken about her as well. Everyone has their distinct, delicious reason for loving travel. Like grandma’s jar of pickles that changes tang and texture over time, but remains a thrilling fix to the oft-mundane meal of life, travel keeps on giving.

And more importantly, it has been proven that travelling helps to improve your sense of empathy. As a traveller, you are often taking; taking from a place and the people who offer up their time to you, because they are kind or because a common friend has introduced you, or because they are curious or bored, or because you are from a place which has captured their imagination through a film or book. You are also giving: through consuming, you contribute to local economies. Like Anthony Bourdain says, As you move through this life and this world, you change things slightly; you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life–and travel–leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks–on your body or on your heart–are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.
